Preparation

Before we meet, it’s important to think about your project and expectations. Spend some time brainstorming your thoughts…

1. Goals – What do you want to achieve? What style of garden? Colors you like or don’t like – monochromatic? How will you use the space? Collecting images and magazine cut-outs of things you like is quite beneficial – the more descriptive you can be prior to your consultation will aid the design process and project structure.

2. Budget – Be realistic. Every project requires the structure of a budget – be prepared to consider costs of the design process & consultation, labor, soil & materials, etc.  Often a rough idea of cost is attainable but the final total may fluctuate depending on availability of materials and changes the client directs throughout the project. This will be one of the first points we discuss and base the rest of the consultation around.

3. Soft-scaping/hard-scaping - In addition to installing plant material, does your project require stone work, a retaining wall, carpentry, gravel, an artisan gate? Often hard-scaping builds the structure and “bones” of your space and is an important consideration for any project. I’m happy to bring books with me to our consultation or recommend websites for inspiration.

4. Maintenance – any attractive garden is well-maintained. Do you plan to care for your garden yourself or will you need assistance? Post-project, you will receive a maintenance care guide outlining the basics in garden care and the option to choose how involved you want to be.

5. Containers – Depending on your space, containers are often a consideration and create mini-gardens which can be close at hand. Whether a small apartment balcony or poolside deck, containers compliment gardens, entryways, patios, and terraces, offering seasonal interest and beauty. A great way to incorporate annuals and edibles into your garden.

6. Additional considerations: irrigation, water features, boulders, lighting, garden art…

7. Time-line: Planning early is highly recommended. Consultations prior to spring allow for the planning to occur before the season gets underway. Installations for gardens in Vancouver are generally recommended between February – June and September – November, although site prep & hard-scaping can often be achieved any time of year.
